JPEG Compressor

Make a JPEG smaller at the size it already is. Pick the quality, see the saving before you download.

How it works

  1. Open the image

It is decoded in this tab at its own resolution. Nothing is uploaded.

  2. Set the quality

The result and its byte count update as you drag, so you can stop at the point where you can no longer see the difference.

  3. Download

The file comes back the same pixel size it went in at.

  • compress jpg online
  • jpeg compressor to 100kb

This jpeg compressor makes a JPG smaller at the size it already is: pick the quality, see the saving, download. Free, with no sign-up, and online with nothing uploaded. As a jpg compressor it strips hidden metadata too.

Compress jpg file sizes by half or more with no visible change. As a jpg size reducer for a hard limit, use compress to a size: jpeg compressor to 100kb, jpeg compressor to 50kb, jpeg compressor to 20kb or jpeg compressor to 1mb. Compress jpg online with nothing uploaded.

JPG to JPEG compressor

JPG and JPEG are the same format with two spellings, so a jpg to jpeg compressor is just a JPEG compressor. If a site insists on ".jpeg", rename the file; nothing else changes.

Why it matters

Not resized behind your back

The image keeps the pixel dimensions it arrived with unless you set a longest edge yourself. A smaller number on a smaller picture is not a saving.

The photograph stays a photograph

This re-encodes the original pixels. It does not trace them into flat shapes, which is what turns a sky into stripes.

A result that is not better is labelled

A photograph re-saved as PNG is often larger than it started. When that happens the page says so and says what to try instead.

Questions

What JPEG quality should I use?

80–85% for photos is the usual sweet spot. Below 60%, blocks and halos start to show.

Will the image get smaller in pixels?

No, not unless you ask. The longest-edge box is zero by default, which means keep the size.

Why is my PNG not getting smaller?

PNG is lossless, so quality does nothing to it. The saving available in a browser is reducing the number of colours, which is the Colours slider, or saving as JPEG if the image has no transparency.

Is the file uploaded anywhere?

No. It is read by this page and never leaves the machine.
