How to digitize for embroidery

  1. Pick simple artwork. A logo, badge or drawing with flat colours and clear edges digitizes best; a photograph does not sew well.
  2. Set the hoop and size. Choose your hoop (4 × 4 in up to 8 × 12 in) and the design width; it is fitted with room to spare.
  3. Choose the fill angle. Areas are filled at that angle with underlay; thin shapes become satin columns, lines running stitches.
  4. Check the stitches. The preview shows every stitch and colour, with the stitch count and sewing time.
  5. Download for your machine. DST for Tajima and most commercial machines, PES for Brother and Babylock, JEF for Janome. Sew a test first.

What it shows

Every stitchDrawn in its thread colour, as thread or as thin lines, on the fabric colour you pick. Jumps between areas can be shown dashed.
The sew-outDrag the slider, or press Play, to watch the design stitch out in the order the machine sews it: useful for checking the order of colours and where the jumps go.
The numbersThe real size in millimetres and inches, the stitch count, colour changes, jumps and trims, the time it takes at 800 stitches a minute, and which standard hoops it fits.
The threadsPES and PEC name their Brother threads and JEF its Janome threads; each colour can be hidden to see what it covers. DST and EXP store no colours, so stand-in colours are used and the page says so.

DST converter: JPG to DST and DST file conversion, free

  • jpg to dst converter
  • jpg to dst
  • dst file converter
  • jpeg to dst

This dst converter does both jobs people mean by it. Drop a picture and it is digitized into a Tajima DST; drop a PES, JEF, EXP or PEC and it is converted to DST stitch for stitch.

As a jpg to dst converter, it turns jpg to dst in one pass: colours are reduced to thread colours, shapes become fill and satin, and thin lines become running stitch. JPEG to DST works the same way, since JPEG and JPG are the same file.

As a dst file converter it also shows a true sew-out preview, stitch count, size and colour stops before you download, so you see what the machine will sew.

Questions

Can I convert a JPG to DST for free?

Yes. Upload the JPG, check the sew-out preview, and download the DST. No sign-up and no upload.

Does DST keep thread colours?

No. DST stores stitches and colour changes but not the colours themselves; your machine or software assigns them. That is normal for DST.

Which machines read DST?

Tajima, Barudan, ZSK, Ricoma, Happy, Melco and most commercial multi-needle machines.

How do I convert a file to DST?

Drop the embroidery file on this page and press Download DST. PES, DST, JEF, EXP and PEC are read; the stitches are written again as DST exactly as they are, in the same order, at the same size.

Can I convert a JPG or PNG to DST?

Yes: drop the picture here and it is taken to the picture-to-DST digitiser, which traces it into fills and satin outlines sized for your hoop and writes the DST. Logos and simple drawings sew best; a photograph does not.

How do I open a PES, DST or JEF file without embroidery software?

Drop it on this page. It is read in your browser, nothing is installed and the file is not uploaded: the design appears stitch by stitch, with its size and stitch count.

Can I convert PES to DST, or DST to PES?

Yes. Open the file and press the format you want under "Save for another machine": PES for Brother and Babylock, DST for Tajima and most commercial machines, JEF for Janome. The stitches are kept exactly; a DST has no colours, so moving to it loses them, and moving from it the page asks your machine to pick.

Why are the colours of my DST file wrong?

A DST file does not store thread colours, only where the colour changes are. Every viewer has to guess; this one uses clearly different stand-in colours so each block can be told apart.

Will it tell me if the design fits my hoop?

Yes: the facts panel lists the standard hoops it fits, from 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) up, by the design's real size.

Is it free?

Yes, and it needs no account.

Is this free embroidery digitizing software?

Yes. It is free embroidery digitizing software that runs in your browser: no download, no account and no trial. Your picture is digitized on your own computer and never uploaded.

What is embroidery digitizing?

Embroidery digitizing is turning artwork into a stitch file an embroidery machine can sew: every area becomes fill stitches or satin columns, every line a running stitch, in the order the machine sews them, with the colour changes between. The result is a DST, PES or JEF file rather than a picture.

Is there free embroidery software that works online?

This is free embroidery software online: digitize a JPG, PNG or SVG into DST, PES or JEF, open and check a stitch file, see its size, stitch count and hoop fit, and convert between formats. Nothing to install on Windows, Mac, a Chromebook or a phone.

How does online embroidery digitizing work here?

Online embroidery digitizing here happens in the page itself: the picture is traced into clean colour areas, each area is filled with stitches at the angle you choose, outlines get satin or running stitches, and the design is fitted to your hoop before the file is written.

How do I digitize for embroidery?

Start with a simple, clear picture - a logo or drawing with flat colours. Choose your hoop and the design width, pick the fill angle, and convert. Check the stitch preview and the stitch count, then download DST for Tajima and commercial machines, PES for Brother and Babylock, or JEF for Janome. Sew a test on scrap fabric first.
