Photo to Tattoo Stencil: A Portrait, Pet or Reference Photo to Clean Lines
Turn a portrait, a pet photo or a reference picture into tattoo stencil lines that follow the face and form, not every hair and shadow, with an optional shading guide. Print on a thermal printer or trace it. Free, nothing uploaded.
How it works
Open a picture
A photo, a drawing, a flash sheet or a design: JPG, PNG, HEIC or WebP, at full resolution, in this tab.
Set the stencil
Pick purple, blue, black or red and fine or bold lines; move Detail and Line weight until the lines you want to tattoo are there and the noise is not. Add line or dot shading if you like.
Download and transfer
Print the PNG or the A4 PDF on a thermal stencil printer or paper, or trace it by hand.
Photo to tattoo stencil: lines that follow the form
Photo to tattoo stencil is the hard case: a photo has no lines in it, only light and shade. The stencil maker finds the face, the eyes and the outline of the subject, draws the structural lines first and leaves out fur and skin texture that would print as noise, then adds an optional shading guide in a lighter mark.
It is free, the photo never leaves your computer, and the stencil prints in purple, blue, black or red at the size you set, ready for a thermal stencil printer or to trace by hand.

Why it matters
Hard lines, one colour
No grey and no soft edges, because a stencil only has to show where the needle goes.
Fine line, like a drawn stencil
Every mark is thinned to its centre and redrawn at one even width, so hair and fur come out as strands and each edge as one clean line, as a stencil artist draws it. Pupils and dots stay solid.
Purple, blue, black or red
Purple and blue match thermal stencil paper; black and red for tracing and for checking on screen.
Nothing is uploaded
Client photos and designs stay on your device.
Questions
What kind of photo works best?
A sharp photo with the subject well lit and a plain background. A busy background is drawn too, so crop to the subject first.
Can I use a photo of a pet?
Yes. Fur is reduced to the lines that show its direction, not every hair, so the stencil stays readable on skin.
How do I make a tattoo stencil from a photo?
Open the photo, choose the stencil colour, lower Detail until skin texture and background disappear, and download. Print it on a thermal stencil printer or trace it.
Should I mirror my tattoo stencil?
Not for a thermal printer or stencil paper used the usual way: the transfer puts the design on skin the right way round. Mirror only for methods that reverse it, such as some hand-transfer or iron-on papers. Always check lettering before applying.
Why purple?
Thermal and hectograph stencil paper transfers a purple (blue-violet) line, so a purple stencil on screen looks like the one on skin. Choose blue, black, red or any colour to trace by hand or to match your paper.
How do I make the stencil a set size?
Type the tattoo size in cm or inches, tall or wide. The PNG is tagged to print at exactly that size and the A4 PDF places it at real size, so a 12 cm design prints 12 cm.
What is the cut line?
A dashed outline a few millimetres round the whole design, like a sticker's, showing where to cut the stencil sheet before it goes on the skin. The size is written under it.
What is the difference between line and dot shading?
Line shading lays fine parallel hatching in the shadows, crossed in the darkest, as stencil artists draw it. The dotted guide only marks the edge of the shadows.
